본 연구는 박경리 대하소설 ｢토지｣에 나타난 여러 가지 복수 중 최치수의 복수와 그의 딸 최서희 복수, 그리고 소설 중 최악의 인간이라 할 수 있는 조준구의 복수를 중심으로 그 과정과 의미를 논구한 것이다. 소설 ｢토지｣ 에는 생명 사상이나 인간의 존엄성과는 전혀 어울리지 않는 복수들이 자주 등장한다. 이러한 복수를 해야 하는 피해자 측은 ‘산다는 것이 통곡인’ 경우가 많다. 반대로 인간이 이렇게 사악할 수 있을까 의문이 들 정도로 복수의 이름으로 악을 아무런 죄의식 없이 저지른 경우도 있다. 원래 복수는 응보적 정의를 실현하는 것이었다. 타인의 불법행위에서 생명에는 생명, 눈에는 눈, 이에는 이로 대응하는 동해보복의 상호성 원칙의 정의이다. 응보적 정의는 응보 내지 보복을 가해자에게 가해와 동일한 내용과 형태로 부과되는 것을 내용으로 하는 정의이다. 최치수의 복수 시도와 중단 및 최서희의 복수는 생명을 살리는 복수요, 인간에 대한 연민이나 존엄 및 가치를 생각하게 하는 것이었다. 이에 반해 조준구의 복수는 자신의 자존심이나 무시의 대가로 타인의 생명을 앗아가는 무도한 것이었다. 작가는 지역공동체에서 사소한 일에 의해 인간의 목숨을 앗아가는 무도한 인간들이 존재함을 알게 하였다. 자기를 무시했다고 타인의 목숨을 앗아가는 악인의 행위를 통해 생명의 고귀함을 역설적으로 성찰하게 하였다. 복수는 때로는 회복적 정의나 시적 정의를 희구하지만, 악인의 복수는 또 다른 복수를 낳는다. 또한 그러한 복수는 결국 자신을 패망의 길로 이끌게 된다. 왜냐하면 악은 ‘그릇된 정열’이어서 우둔할 수밖에 없고 “찢어발길 수 있는 허위의 의상을 걸치고 있기 때문이다”. 조준구의 복수를 통해 이것을 다시 한번 확인시켜 주고 있다. 반대로 선한 자들의 철저히 내려놓고, 잊어주는 복수는 화석화된 병든 마음을 치유해 주는 치유의 역사(役事)가 나타나게 된다. ‘토지’에서는 이러한 회복과 치유의 복수를 통해 생명의 존귀함을 알게 한다.
Abstract
This study examines the various forms of revenge depicted in Park Kyung-ni’s epic novel Toji (The Land), focusing particularly on the acts of revenge carried out by Choi Chisu, his daughter Choi Seohee, and the character Jo Jun-gu, who is portrayed as the most reprehensible figure in the narrative. Throughout the novel, scenes of revenge frequently appear in ways that clash with notions of the sanctity of life and human dignity. The victims of such revenge often find themselves in circumstances where “to live is to lament,” while the perpetrators commit acts of evil under the name of revenge without any sense of remorse, revealing the extremities of human depravity. Revenge originally derives from the concept of retributive justice, a principle grounded in lex talionis—“an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”—which demands proportional retaliation for wrongful acts. Retributive justice seeks to restore moral balance by imposing penalties equivalent in nature to the harm inflicted. In Toji, however, revenge evolves beyond this classical model and becomes a lens through which themes of ethical maturation, communal healing, and the value of life are explored. Choi Chisu’s aborted attempt at revenge and Choi Seohee’s ensuing pursuit of justice represent forms of life-affirming revenge, emphasizing compassion, human dignity, and moral reflection. By contrast, Jo Jun-gu’s revenge stems from wounded pride and perceived slights; it manifests as a ruthless taking of life devoid of ethical justification. Through this figure, Park exposes the presence of ordinary yet lethal malice within local communities and invites a deeper reflection on the preciousness of human life. Revenge rooted in malice inevitably begets further cycles of vengeance and ultimately leads to the perpetrator’s downfall, for evil is propelled by a “distorted passion” and cloaked in the false façade of righteousness. Jo Jun-gu’s fate serves as a vivid demonstration of this truth. Conversely, the forgiving and restorative forms of revenge enacted by morally upright characters function as acts of healing, alleviating the fossilized wounds of the heart. Through these restorative processes, Toji highlights the inherent worth and dignity of human life.
