Strategic Diversification and Firm Performance: A Quantitative Study on the Impacts of Horizontal and Vertical Diversification

본 연구는 말레이시아 제조업 및 서비스업 400개 기업을 대상으로 수평적 및 수직적 다각화 전략이 기업 성과에 미치는 직접적 및 조절 효과를 조사하였다. 연구는 자원기반관점(Resource-Based View, RBV), 동적역량이론(Dynamic Capabilities Theory), 거래비용경제학(Transaction Cost Economics)을 기반으로, 수평적 다각화, 수직적 다각화, 혁신역량, 운영효율성, 기업 성과, 시장 역학, 자원 활용의 7개 핵심 구성요인을 포함한 구조방정식모형(PLS-SEM)을 구축하고 검증하였다. 연구 결과, 수평적·수직적 다각화 전략 모두 기업 성과를 유의미하게 향상시키는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 수평적 다각화는 혁신역량을 촉진하며, 수직적 다각화는 운영효율성을 향상시켜 성과를 증대시키는 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 조절분석 결과, 시장 역학과 자원 활용이 다각화 전략과 기업 성과 간 관계에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 조절 변수들은 환경 변동성과 내부 역량이 강한 상황에서 다각화 전략의 성과 향상 효과를 강화한다. 본 연구는 신흥시장 맥락에서 다각화와 성과 간 관계에 대한 실증적 증거를 제공하고, 조절효과를 포함한 전략적 관리 문헌에 기여한다. 실무적으로는 말레이시아 기업들이 혁신과 효율성을 기반으로 한 전략적 다각화로 성과를 향상시킬 수 있는 로드맵을 제공하며, 정책 입안자와 경영자는 기업의 민첩성, 혁신 및 통합 역량을 강화할 수 있는 제도적 지원 방안을 마련할 필요가 있다.
Abstract
This study investigates the direct and moderating effects of horizontal and vertical diversification strategies on firm performance. Based on RBV, Dinamic Capabilities Theory and Transaction Cost Economics, the research is using primary quantitative data colledted from 400 Malaysian firms. Seven key constructs: horizontal diversification, vertical diversification, innovation capability, operational efficiency, firm performance, market dynamics and resource utilization were assessed using comprehensive structural equation model (PLS-SEM). The results showing the positive impact of horizontal and vertical diversification strategies on firm performance. Horizontal diversification fostering innovation capability and vertical diversification promoting operational efficiency. Both moderators Market dynamics and Resource utilization enhancing the impact of diversification under conditions of environmental volatility and internal capability strength. The results contributing to strategic management literature by offering empirical evidence from an emerging market context. Additionally, by incorporating moderation effects in the diversification-performance link. Practically, the findings provide firms and policy makers with a road map for enhancing performance through carefully aligned diversification strategies supported by innovation and efficiency capabilities.
