Analysing the Growth Factors of AI Startups into High-Growth Companies: Focusing on the Case of Korean AI Software Startups

본 연구는 국내 AI 스타트업의 고성장 결정요인을 실증적으로 규명하여, 전통적 기업 성장 이론과 차별화되는 AI 산업 고유의 성장 메커니즘을 탐구하였다. 과학기술정보통신부·소프트웨어정책연구소의 「인공지능산업실태조사」 마이크로데이터를 활용한 로지스틱 회귀분석 결과, 외부 데이터 확보와 벤처캐피털 투자가 AI 스타트업의 고성장에 통계적으로 유의한 긍정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 반면, 자체 수집 데이터, 공공 데이터 활용, 정부 지원금은 고성장과 유의한 관계를 보이지 않았으며, 기업 규모, R&D 비율, 특허, 업력, 수출 등 전통적 성장 결정요인 역시 통계적 유의성을 확인할 수 없었다. 이러한 결과는 AI 스타트업의 성장이 내부 자원 축적보다는 외부 자원의 전략적 활용, 특히 데이터의 접근성·적시성·품질과 벤처캐피털을 통한 종합적 성장 생태계 확보에 의해 결정됨을 시사한다. 본 연구는 AI 산업의 맥락 특수성을 반영한 실증적 증거를 제공함으로써, 스타트업 성장 전략 수립과 정책 설계에 이론적·실무적 기여를 한다.
Abstract
This study investigates key factors influencing the high growth potential of domestic AI software startups, aiming to provide strategic insights for successful growth. Utilizing the AI Industry Survey data from the Software Policy & Research Institute, the research employed logistic regression analysis to assess the impact of various independent variables on high growth likelihood. Results reveal that the effective use of external resources, especially venture capital funding, significantly influences high growth, with startups leveraging external data showing a greater potential for high growth. Conversely, factors traditionally associated with high growth, such as government funding and export activity, showed no statistically significant impact. These findings highlight the importance of not only resource acquisition but also strategic utilization of external resources for achieving high growth in AI startups. This study offers policy insights to support sustained growth in the AI industry and enhance the competitiveness of AI startups.
