본 연구는 가구주의 감각기관 장애나 육체적 제약이 배우자의 노동공급에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 고정효과모형을 사용해 실증분석했다. 가구주에게 건강충격이 발생했을 때 배우자의 노동공급 방향과 연관성있는 변수의 상관관계를 살펴보았다. 인적ㆍ경제적 특성을 활용해 비교 집단을 구성하고 가구주 건강충격 발생 시 배우자의 취업 여부에 미치는 효과를 설명했다. 가구주에게 건강충격 발생 시 배우자의 노동공급은 3.6%포인트 감소하며 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구에서는 기존 연구와 다르게 가시적으로 보이지 않는 인적자본인 건강을 감각기관 장애와 육체적 제약 지표를 활용해 가구주와 배우자 사이의 노동공급 관계를 분석했다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 또한 건강충격 발생 가구의 노동공급 특성에 따른 현황을 살펴보고 이에 따른 지원정책을 제시했다. 가구주에게 육체적 제약이나 감각기관 건강충격 발생 시 개인 단위를 넘어서 가구에 미치는 영향을 알아보고 노동대체효과를 분석했다는 점에서 가치가 있다.
Abstract
This study empirically examines how sensory impairments or physical limitations experienced by the household head affect the spousal labor supply, using a fixed effects model. We investigate the direction and correlates of changes in spousal labor supply following a health shock to the household head, and explain the effects on spouses’ employment status by constructing comparison groups based on human and economic characteristics. The results show that when a health shock occurs to the household head, the probability of spousal employment decreases by 3.6 percentage points, and this effect is statistically significant. Unlike prior studies, this research leverages indicators of sensory impairment and physical limitation to operationalize health−an intangible form of human capital−and analyzes the labor supply relationship between household heads and their spouses. In addition, the study examines labor supply patterns among households experiencing health shocks and proposes policy implications tailored to these characteristics. By moving beyond the individual level to assess household-level impacts and by analyzing labor substitution effects following health shocks to the household head, this study offers meaningful contributions to the literature.
