우월의 포즈가 쓴 『명랑』의 선정성: 김지미·최무룡의 이혼 기사를 중심으로

이 글은 1960년대 잡지 『명랑』에 실린 김지미와 최무룡의 이혼 기사를 중심으로 대중잡지가 어떠한 언어로 선정적 기사를 생산했는지에 주목하였다. 이는 대중잡지가 비판받았던 이유인 선정적이고 자극적인 속성이 역으로 대중잡지의 특징이 될 수 있을 것이라는 판단에 기반한 것이다. 먼저 『명랑』은 이미 알려진 주간지 정보를 고스란히 가져오면서도 관련된 이야기를 덧붙여 두 사람의 스토리를 확장한다. 이러한 양상은 『명랑』의 기사가 두 사람에 대해 더 많이 알고 쓴 것이라는 인상을 강하게 풍긴다. 또한 『명랑』은 각종 소문을 확인하는 입장에서, 또 취재할 수 있는 기자라는 위치를 이용하여 여타의 매체나 대중들보다 우위에 선 화법을 이어간다. 마치 기존의 소문을 나서서 확인하는 듯한 포즈는 새로운 사실이 없더라도 『명랑』을 더 많은 정보를 가진 매체로 위치시킬 수 있었다. 마지막으로 『명랑』은 기존의 보수적인 이데올로기를 지속적으로 재생산하면서 남성 우위의 시선과 ‘정상적’ 가족이라는 형태 아래 두 사람의 재결합의 가능성을 서술하면서 스캔들을 지속시킨다. 이러한 기사 쓰기 방식은 두 사람의 이혼을 이미 종료된 사건이 아닌 가십을 재생산할 수 있는 스캔들로 비화시키면서 독자의 관심을 끌어낸다. 인쇄된 매체라는 속성에 기자라는 지위, 정보수집의 가능성, 보수적 이데올로기의 지속적인 노출과 재생산 등을 포함한 잡지 『명랑』은 독자에 비해 우월한 해당 속성을 활용하여 오랫동안 선정적인 흥미를 제공했다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
This study focuses on how the 1960s popular entertainment magazine, Myeongrang, produced sensational articles, specifically centered on the divorce of Kim Ji-mee and Choi Mu-ryong. This research is based on the premise that the very sensationalism and provocative nature for which popular magazines were criticized can, in fact, be viewed as their defining characteristic. First, Myeongrang expanded the narrative of the couple by incorporating information from existing weeklies while adding its own anecdotal layers. This approach created a strong impression that the magazine possessed deeper, insider knowledge of their lives. Second, by adopting the persona of a "fact-checker" of rumors and leveraging the authoritative status of an investigative reporter, Myeongrang maintained a superior rhetorical position over other media outlets and the general public. This "investigative pose" allowed the magazine to claim the position of a more informed authority, even in the absence of new factual evidence. Finally, Myeongrang sustained the scandal by continuously reproducing conservative ideologies, discussing the possibility of the couple’s reunion through a male-centric gaze and the lens of the "normal" family structure. Through these journalistic methods, the magazine transformed the divorce from a concluded event into an ongoing scandal capable of regenerating gossip, thereby sustaining reader interest. By leveraging its inherent properties as a print medium, the authoritative status of its journalists, and its exclusive access to information, the magazine Myeongnang consistently reproduced conservative ideologies. It utilized this relative superiority over its readership to provide sensationalized entertainment over an extended period.
