성서에 비추어 본 ESG와 지속가능한 교회를 위한 연구－ 환경(E)을 중심으로

This study examines the environmentl (E) dimension of ESG from a biblical perspective and proposes practical strategies to enhance the sustainability of the Korean church in an era of climate crisis. It critically analyzes the theological roots of environmental indifference-namely anthropocentric soteriology, a dualistic worldview, and dispensational eschatology-and offers alternatives through an ecological hermeneutic of Scripture. These alternatives include a creation-centered soteriology, a non-dualistic worldview, and an eschatology oriented toward the reign (kingdom) of God. On this basis, the study engages the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and identifies five practice areas within the environmental (E) dimension of ESG, drawn from the seventeen SDGs, as concrete action agendas for the Korean church. Specifically, it explores how the UN’s detailed action targets in the areas of water and sanitation (SDG 6), clean energy (SDG 7), climate action (SDG 13), life below water (SDG 14), and life on land (SDG 15) relate to and can inform ecclesial practices in Korea. The study argues that the Korean church should integrate an affirmation of creation and a vision of salvation and eschatology understood as participation in and fulfillment of the kingdom of God within these practical initiatives. In conclusion, it contends that by embracing the concerns raised by ESG, the Korean church is called to be transformed into a life-giving community committed to the restoration of the created order.
