중소 수출기업의 디지털 전환 성숙도와 혁신역량 및 정부지원의 시너지 효과 - 혁신성과를 중심으로 -

초록
[연구목적] 본 연구는 우리나라 중소 수출제조기업을 대상으로 기업의 디지털 전환 성숙도가 혁신성과에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석하는 데 목적을 두고 수행되었다. 특히 디지털 전환 성숙도와 혁신성과 간의 관계에서, 기업 내부의 혁신역량과 외부의 정부지원 수혜 여부가 어떠한 조절효과와 시너지를 창출하는지 심층적으로 검증하고자 하였다. [연구방법] 본 연구에서는 2018년부터 2022년까지 중소벤처기업부의 ‘스마트공장 보급·확산사업’에 참여한 기업의 정보를 기초로, 한국기업데이터에서 제공하는 재무 및 특허 정보를 결합하여 수출 경험이 있는 총 943개의 제조 중소기업을 최종 표본으로 확정하였다. 디지털 전환 성숙도는 스마트공장 보급사업의 도입 단계 기준에 따라 ‘취약’, ‘기초’, ‘보통’, 그리고 ‘우수’의 4단계로 세분화하였으며, 혁신성과는 특허 출원 건수로 측정하였다. 인과관계를 확인하기 위해 다중회귀분석을 실시되었으며, 혁신역량과 정부지원의 조절효과를 검증하기 위해 상호작용항을 포함한 위계적 조절회귀분석을 수행되었다. [연구결과] 디지털 전환 성숙도의 주효과를 검증한 결과, 디지털 전환 성숙도가 높을수록 혁신성과에 긍정적인 영향을 주는 핵심 요인으로 확인되었다. 특히 ‘취약’ 단계에서 ‘기초’ 단계로 상향되는 초기 이행 구간에서 혁신성과의 개선 효과가 가장 두드러지게 나타났다. 혁신역량의 조절효과를 검증한 결과, 기업의 내재적 혁신역량은 혁신성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 뿐만 아니라, 디지털 전환 성숙도와 혁신성과 간의 긍정적인 관계를 더욱 강화하는 유의미하게 조절하는 효과가 확인되었다. 정부지원의 조절효과를 검증한 결과, 정부지원 수혜 여부는 혁신성과 향상을 위한 직접효과 및 조절효과 모두에서 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. [연구의 시사점] 본 연구는 학술적인 측면에서, 대기업이나 글로벌 정보통신 기업 위주로 진행되던 기존 연구의 한계를 벗어나, 우리나라 주력 제조업에 속한 중소 수출기업을 대상으로 디지털 전환의 효과를 실증하였다는 데 의의가 있다. 또한, 실무적인 측면에서, 기업이 경쟁력을 극대화하기 위해서는 디지털 전환 전략과 혁신 전략을 유기적으로 연계해야 하며, 부족한 자원을 보완하기 위해 개방형 혁신 및 외부 네트워크를 적극 활용하는 유연한 접근이 필요하다는 점을 시사하였다. 마지막으로 정책 제안의 측면에서, 본 연구는 단순 자금 지원을 넘어, 개별 기업의 디지털 성숙도와 내재화 역량을 진단하여 기술 자문, 변화관리 컨설팅, 역량 강화 교육 등 소프트웨어적 간접 지원을 아우르는 정교한 맞춤형 지원을 제안하였다.
Abstract
[Purpose] Our study aimed to empirically analyze the impact of digital transformation maturity on the innovation outcome of small- and medium-sized exporters (SMEs) in Korea. Specifically, we examined the synergies created by internal innovation capabilities and external government support in the relationship between digital transformaton maturity and innovation outcome. [Methodology] The final sample consists of 943 small- and medium-sized exporters.. The dataset was constructed by combining information from companies that participated in the 'Smart Factory Dissemination and Diffusion Project' by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups between 2018 and 2022, along with financial and patent data provided by Korea Enterprise Data. digital transformation maturity was classified into four stages—'Vulnerable', 'Basic', 'Moderate', and 'Excellent'—based on the project's implementation stages. Innovation outcome, was measured by the number of patent applications. A multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify causal relationships; a hierarchical moderated regression analysis including interaction terms was performed to test the moderating effects of innovation capabilities and government support. [Findings] The verification of the main effect revealed that higher digital maturity has a positive effect on innovation outcome. Notably, the improvement in innovation outcome was most pronounced during the initial transition phase from the 'Vulnerable' to the 'Basic' stage. In addition, testing for moderating effects showed that a firm's internal innovation capabilities not only positively influenced innovation outcome directly but also significantly strengthened the positive relationship between digital maturity and innovation outcome. Conversely, government support had little direct or moderating effect on innovation outcome. [Implications] Academically, we empirically tested the effects of SMEs’ digital transformation in South Korea's flagship manufacturing industries, moving beyond the limitations of previous studies that primarily focused on large corporations or global information technology firms. Practically, the findings of out study suggest that to maximize competitiveness, firms should organically align their digital transformation strategies with innovation ones and employ a flexible approach that actively utilizes open innovation and external networks to supplement scarce resources. Finally, from a policy perspective, we proposed sophisticated, customized support that encompasses software-oriented indirect support by precisely diagnosing the ‘digital maturity’ and internalization capabilities of individual firms.
